Between Christmas Eve and Kings Day, it is tradition for families and friends to gather at the homes of their closest and dearest, knocking on the door and asking: “Does the boy piss?” It’s a time of celebration, where people share liqueurs (such as mulled wine, angelica or mulled wine), Christmas sweets, and everything that each home has to offer.
The celebration of the festive season ends on the night of February 1st, on the occasion of Our Lady of the Star Day, with the traditional “Singing to the Stars”. At this time, groups of men, women and children walk the main streets of each municipality (especially in Ribeira Grande), singing songs traditionally associated with good sowing and fishing, among other themes, always having in common the devotion to Our Lady.
